Bees

Without bees, this planet would be a much less bright, sweet place to live. These hardworking, creative creatures have a work ethic that puts us humans in the shade, and because of them, our agriculture, farming, and food production systems are able to thrive and flourish.

Bees are responsible for pollinating our flowering plants, our crops, and help produce at least 1/3 of everything we humans eat!  If not for bees and the truly remarkable innovation of the Hive, not only would we be deprived of the smooth, delicious sweet honey they make -- we also would have no broccoli, asparagus, cantaloupes, blueberries, almonds, or cherries -- and that's just for starters!

Bees also pollinate the beautiful flowers we love so much -- and the flowers, in turn, provide food and shelter for habitat growth so that other animals can thrive. Our tiny partners are essential to the survival of pretty much everything we need and value.

You don't have to be a beekeeper to make the world a bee-friendly place -- there are esimple things that everone can do to help:

  • Plant flowers and herbs. Bees love them and need them for food.

  • Leave some weeds to grow - They're actually great bee food. If you DO remove weeds, try to avoid using pesticides and chemicals.

  • Bees get thirsty, too -- so it helps to leave a small basin of water outdoors so that they can drink and rest.

  • Buy local honey!  Of course, we're a little biased, but this is always a good way to go -- you're sustaining their production, you know where your food comes from, and it's seasonal to your region.
